Bristol Pottery
Bristol Pottery can trace its roots back to the mid seventeenth century. Pottery produced then was mostly blue and white and was called English Delft. Moving on in time, and situated in Lodge Causeway Fishponds, we find the factory of Pountneys & Co Ltd. When it opened, it was the most modern, not only in England, but Europe as well.
As time progressed, there was not the investment needed to keep pace with its competitors. Gradually, with low wages and an ageing workforce and unable to attract younger workers, they moved the whole company to Cornwall, nearer to the clay needed to produce their products, and thinking that their workers would move with the company.
The plan proved to be unsuccessful, and bankruptcy followed. The following photos are from a local collection. This collection was put together, most carefully, by a good friend of mine. It is without doubt, a remarkable display of Bristol pottery. The whole collection is housed in a purpose built unit, extremely well designed, with a lot of thought given to the layout, to make viewing a delight.
