Building of the Matthew – 7th November 2023
Clive Burlton, a stalwart of the Bristol history community, gave a thoroughly interesting talk on the build of The Matthew. This was to commemorate 500 years of John Cabot’s voyage to Newfoundland in 1497.
Indeed, 400 years was celebrated by building of the Cabot Tower and similar in St John’s in Newfoundland.
There has been many depictions of the original Matthew. These can be seen on stamps, stain glass windows in St Mary Redcliffe, cigarette cards, paintings, even Royal Doulton and others. However, there is probably no actual picture of the original and certainly no plans to replicate. The new Matthew built 1994 to 97 on Redcliffe Quay was based on investigations of similar ships of the time, Mary Rose etc., albeit to weigh approx 50 tons was known.
Martin Heighton came up with the idea to build a full size Matthew. Colin Mudie was the designer. Helical Bar plc initially funded the project to the tune of £1.2m+.
The ship left Bristol 2nd May 1997 and arrived at Bonavista 54 days later. The trip back took place Sept 98 but surprisingly only took 18 days.
A great film showing clips from TV at the time of the building brought back many memories.
Clive finished the night by fielding some well thought questions and a well attended night was enjoyed by all.
